Environmentalism

From the 1960s to the 1990's, the environment was a big concern throughout the United States and beyond. The environmentalism movement seeked to improved and protect the natural environment from pollution, harmful chemicals, and other harmful things that harm mother nature.

After World War II, a synthetic chemical pesticide, called DDT, was used by farmers to keep insects out of their crops. It is one of the most powerful pesticides avalible. People thought it was safe to use, but what they didn't realize that it was getting into plants, animals, and humans. An ecologist and author, named Rachel Carson, did research about DDT. Carson researched for about 4 years before she published her research in a book. Silent Spring was published in 1962. The book brought shocking news to the public and the pesticide companies were not happy. They said that Silent Spring didn't give the full idea of using DDT. They said that Carson only talked about the negative things about the pesticide, not the positive. Yet, people focused more the harmful effects DDT had on the environment. Since Carson's book, the pesticide indusrty has made DDT much safer to use.

Like the resource it seeks to protect,
wildlife conservation must be dynamic,
changing as conditions change,
seeking always to become more effective.
- Rachel Carson

Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] was established in 1970. It was formed from the impact Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring had on the future members of the EPA. It was formed by the government to accomplish their goals of:

  • Establishing and enforce environmental protection standards.
  • Conducting environmental research.
  • Provideing assistance to other combatting environmental pollution.
  • Assisting the CEQ in developing and recommending to the President new policies for environmental protection.

The Environmental Protection Agency is still around today. After about 40 years, they are still helping to spred the word about the issues that we are facing in the environment.external image epa-1.jpg

Recycling
external image recycle.jpgRecycling is the reuse of trash. People have been recycling since about 400BC. It became a big deal during the environmentalism movement. It was brought back by the first Earth Day, which was in 1970. Energy costs were rising, and the government had to make a large investment into recycling. They need a way to converve engery, so they started recycling aluminum which only required 5% of the energy need by virgin production. People recycle paper, plastic, metal, glass, and textiles. People do recycle today and they converve energy by doing other things than recycling.
